Who is the “us” God refers to in Genesis 3:22?
“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:” King James Bible
“Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever “– New American Standard Bible
The serpent already told the woman in verse 5 of Genesis 3 the same thing saying, “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” (King James Bible)
The phrase “to know good and evil” the only point. Otherwise how the man who was not like gods became like them after the fall?
Who had the knowledge good and evil?
1. God the creator
2. the Holy Angels
3. Satan and demons (the evil angels)
Now man is added to the list. The Serpent told them, “…ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” They ate and knew the good and evil because the tree is called “the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” Gen 2:9 says, “And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”
God commanded man saying, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Gen 2:17). Nevertheless, they ate of the tree.
After they ate the fruit, three things happened to them:-
- They died – as God told them – in other words, they were separated from their creator.
- They reached to the level of knowing good and evil
- They became like gods concerning knowing good and evil
Therefore, the message of Genesis 3:22 is just to indicate that the man reached the leave of awareness which is already acquired by those who are listed above. the word “us” refers to all those who acquire the knowledge of good and evil.
otherwise, how on earth Adam who was not like God while he was innocent and sinless could be like God after his fall- dead and sinner?
